Rochester, NY: Hardware Controls Engineer

Position Summary:

The Engineer II for Machine Products Engineering (MPE) is a mid-level engineering position applicable to all disciplines.  The Engineer II is responsible for either current product engineering or design engineering and will rotate across the portfolio to gain exposure and experience.  The Engineer II is typically self-managed and can handle larger scale projects with occasional guidance by a more senior engineer.  Projects will include some customization related to engineer to order (ETO) content.

Job Responsibilities:

Current Product Engineering

Machine design ownership.

  • Execute machine orders.
  • Configure machine to match Sales Orders.
  • Review prior executions and compare contrast to current practice.
  • Review customer specifications and ensure compliance.
  • Technical performance of the resultant machine.
  • Engineering Analysis.
  • Compliance with appropriate safety protocols.

 Design Engineering

  • CAD geometry creation and modification.
  • Master model and configuration management.
  • Engineer to order content.
  • Creation of and compliance with design standards.
  • Creation and execution of engineering change orders.

 Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, define and implement solutions that prevent recurrence of the problem.
  • Interpret a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Comprehend and effectively communicate verbally and in writing to specific audiences while using good judgement regarding appropriateness of communications.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to communicate technical information effectively with customer support, proposal team and service areas to initiate and respond to quotes, production orders and service issues on products.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment, interact in a positive manner with customers and co-workers.
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and deliver results.
  • Willing to cross train and learn.

Mechanical Engineering Skills

CAD Skills:

  • Solid Model Creation: use of proper design intent, model more complex parts with drafts and features not aligned to Cartesian coordinates. Create complex shapes such as pipes with sweeps, creates map keys, use simplified reps to speed regeneration time.
  • Manufacturing Drawing Creation: leverage proper design intent for efficient detailing, create appropriate auxiliary and section views to describe features fully.
  • Assembly Drawing Creation: use proper techniques for archiving assembly drawings, distribute balloon quantities appropriately, create detailed views as needed, include plus parts for clarity, use family tables and shrink wraps to show assembly use
  • CAD Data Manipulation: understanding of version/revision logic and can resolve conflicts. Use intent to modify and locking as needed.

Business System Skill:

  • Material Master: Can determine the source of a blocked material master and address it, can determine the shop status and storage location and quantity of a particular part, understands application of material BOM's
  • BOM Creation, Maintenance: Understands impact of phantoms, nonphantoms, BOM PS, E vs. F, sort strings, and production orders on part procurement. Uses automatic BOM creation where appropriate.
  • Sales Order BOM: Understands Price Book options and their dependencies, can initiate VC changes
  • Machine and Assembly History: Ability to use SAP and micro film to identify machine history.

Machine Design

  • Component Design: use Ansys or Mechanica to verify deflection, heat transfer, vibration and flow. Apply proper fits to precision purchased components, choose a component based on the manufacturer's data to suite a design specification, design for ease of manufacturing.
  • System Design: develop ETO from scratch, designs consist of motion items including rails, trucks, pistons, ability to integrate numerous purchased parts to minimize manufactured parts, design for ease of assembly.
  • Component/Assembly Identification: Attend TRM's and verify machine and assembly completeness and compliance.
  • Impact Estimation: provide engineering hours and material cost estimation for quotations and DCM's.
  • Sheet Metal Design: use proper locating holes, rip reliefs, hand bends, and slots, Design for ease of manufacturing and assembly, use proper design intent.
  • Flat Pattern Creation: ability to diagnose and correct flat pattern errors.

Detailing - GD&T and Tolerancing:

GD&T and Tolerancing Applications: develop GD&T from scratch but requires guidance for full understanding and proper application. Develop tolerancing based on manufacturer's specifications.

Preferred Education/Training/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant technical field
  • 2-5 years of relevant experience
